How Does the Dental Implant Procedure Work?

About 3 million people in the United States have dental implants. With the advancements experts have created in recent years, it’s an exciting time for our patients that want to make the jump into getting implants. Before you rush off to any dentist, we want to make sure you take a look at this guide to learn about how the implant process works, how long they last, and what will be required from you with post-care once the surgery is finished.

How the Procedure Works
Dentists who are serious about the artistry and safety of implants will always have a planning stage with you first before jumping into the procedure. During this time, we will have our specialists check all of the structures that would be affected by the surgery, including gums, face, bones, and more. We will also conduct a comprehensive dental exam, review your medical history, and tailor a treatment plan that takes into account how many implants you will need and how that corresponds to the condition of your jawbone.

From there, the dental implant surgery is done in stages to ensure that the patient has enough time for healing. There are multiple steps to this that have to be done including: damaged tooth removal (if the tooth wasn’t missing already), jawbone grafting if needed, implant placement, bone bonding and healing, abutment placement, artificial tooth placement. We have meticulously maneuvered our surgery process to make sure you’re not waiting too long from start to finish. Depending on your circumstances, we can usually multiple steps done very quickly.

The most important step after the surgery phase is taking time to have the jawbone and implant heal healthily together. Dental implant failures aren’t common so if there is an issue, we want to identify the problem immediately and work to fix it. With this phase, if everything is successful, the jawbone will grow and bond with the surface of the implant, which will anchor it down and making it as natural as the real tooth that was there before. This process can take the longest because a solid base has to be created for us to be able to continue.

Finally, once the implant posts have healed and the jawbone is healthy, your dentist will be able to place your new artificial teeth. To do this, more impressions will be made of your mouth so your dentist can give you the most natural teeth possible that fit just you. With the right care from both you and your doctor from the first stage to last, your implants can stay as bright and shiny as they were when you first got them done.

How Long They Last
Investing in dental implants means you’re investing your lifetime into maintaining a great smile. Natural teeth can last your entire life if they are properly cared for and this is the same with implants also. For many of our patients, their implants have lasted them 20+ years, and very few of them need any major work on them besides their scheduled check-ups. The major issues we’ve seen with an implant not lasting or needing to be worked one usually had an issue that could have been prevented such as a better oral hygiene routine or not missing cleaning appointments.

Post-Procedure Care
Right after the procedure, your dentist will provide you with the necessary information about your post-operation care routine. You will have to be careful with the toothpastes and mouthwashes you use as there are some that can irritate the new teeth and wounds more. You will also be expected to consume soft foods and liquids for a bit, which will only help the healing in the long run.

Since it is a surgery, some pain and swelling is expected. If you experience swelling of your face and gums, bruising of your skin and gums, pain at the implant sight, and some minor bleeding, there is no reason to be overly concerned as these will wear off as the healing process continues.

Pain medications and antibiotics will be prescribed to you after the surgery. These will definitely help decrease the discomfort but if the pain becomes more severe, you have to let your dentist know immediately as this could be a sign of early implant failure or other issues.

If I could give Awesome Smiles negative stars, I would. My experience here was an absolute train wreck, and it all comes down to the rude and incompetent Patricia Viriato.

First, I was told I needed a deep cleaning, and this so-called "professional" had the nerve to claim my insurance would only cover a measly 20%. When I called my insurance directly, they informed me I was actually covered for 85%—what a shocker! When I confronted Patricia about her blatant lie, she just doubled down, insisting it was still 20%. It was like talking to a wall made of ignorance.

Feeling pressured and trapped, I reluctantly agreed to fork over $900 upfront, believing I could get reimbursed later. They even coerced me into making a down payment right then and there.

To make matters worse, my insurance denied the claim because Awesome Smiles didn’t even perform the necessary periodontal charting. Seriously, how incompetent can one office be?

When I returned to demand a refund, Patricia acted as if I was the problem. Her attitude was dismissive and infuriating. She couldn’t accept that she messed everything up. After I insisted on speaking to a manager, I was finally told they would process a refund—but honestly, it felt like they were just trying to brush me off.

Do yourself a favor and avoid Awesome Smiles like the plague. Patricia is a prime example of everything wrong with customer service—rude, uninformed, and completely unhelpful. Save your time, money, and sanity—go anywhere else!

I can't say enough good things about Dr. Isabelle and Ana! They made me feel so comfortable during my visits, which was a relief since I was a bit nervous about the amount of work I needed done. They turned what could have been a stressful experience into a wonderful one, and I truly appreciate it. They also worked with my busy schedule, and the front desk staff was incredibly friendly. I highly recommend this place—everyone I interacted with was just fantastic!

My visits here have been great! Friendly, kind staff and they made me feel comfortable from the start to finish. The service quality is truly exceptional! I'm very happy with my visits! Dental assistant Manny is very attentive and kind!
The only exception is I wish if they promise incentives to their patients for bringing new patients that they would follow through on their promise.

I am literally the biggest baby when it comes to having to go to the dentist. I am just always so nervous and scared of any and everything. The staff and doctors at Awesome Smiles totally put me at ease. I felt greeted and like a VIP from the moment I walked in the door. Dr Isabelle Morris was my Doctor and she was very patient very understanding and kept me at ease the entire time. This has been my most memorable experience at a dentist's office and I feel encouraged to follow my treatment plan. I would definitely recommend this office and will be bringing my entire family here. Another great thing is their hours of operation 8am to 8pm so so convenient. Highly Recommended.. Latoya

I can't say enough about the fabulous experience I had with Dr. Michelle Luis. A true professional in every sense, she is compassionate, empathetic, and possesses a gift that immediately puts you at ease. Her treatment approach is truly collaborative, and she never pressured me to proceed until I was ready to do so. Her skill is unmatched, attention to detail is unparalleled, and - as someone who loathes visiting the dentist - possesses such a gentle touch, that I was never reminded that I was sitting in a dentist's chair. A finer dental experience I have yet to experience. If anyone were to ask, I would certainly recommend they see Dr. Michelle Luis as quickly as they can.

The team at Awesome Smiles provides a warm and inviting atmosphere, where as going to the dentist traditionally has a negative connotation. All of the staff members are friendly and easy to get a long with. In fact, they all remember my name without hesitation. They took good care of my brother and myself. They recommended me to do the Invisalign and I am really enjoying the progress thus far with my treatment and their care.

I called originally for my partner to get a Root Canal done as an emergency visit. Awesome Smiles, was extremely accommodating to get him in next day. Other dental offices were wanting Full Payment on the day of procedure. Awesome Smiles was willing to work with us on a strict budget, we didn't have to pay for the initial visit. My partner got the Root Canal done, and then we went back a week later for the Crown to be put on. The energy of the whole office is very upbeat and everyone makes you feel as though your NOT going to a dull and boring dentist's office. We would definitely recommend to everyone. A+++++++.

I highly recommend Awesome Smiles. I have an infection in my wisdom tooth and my consultation was completely free. Got a cheap script for antibiotics until I get all 4 of my messed up wisdom teeth taken out next week and they offer non credit check payments that are reasonable. Dental work can be super expensive but what they quoted me without insurance, I feel like this is a God send and probably the best price I’ve ever seen for what I need. Everybody there from reception (Isabella) to radiology (Jasmine) to my dentist Dr.Sunny was amazing and caring. I was a bit anxious going in cause of poor treatment by medical professionals in the past, but the low cost for amazing service put me at ease immediately and I look forward to going back.
