Dental Implants: What to Expect With an Emergency Bone Graft

In 2018, there were 2 million dental-related emergency department visits in the United States.

Your teeth have a significant role in your life. They help you chew, speak, and are the first wall of defense for your general health and wellbeing.

And while we wish our teeth were indispensable, they’re not. Severe tooth decay, gum disease, trauma, or tooth overcrowding are common oral health problems that may require an emergency tooth extraction.

Learn everything you need to know about emergency dentistry and where you can find the best dentist for the job.

What Is an Emergency Tooth Extraction?

As the name suggests, an emergency tooth extraction is an immediate need for a tooth removal. This must be done within a 24 to 48-hour period. Most emergency tooth extractions involve pulling out the affected tooth causing oral health issues.

There are many times a patient needs a tooth out. In most cases, patients can simply schedule an appointment as soon as the dentist is available.

However, there are other times a patient cannot wait for the next available time slot. This is when an emergency extraction is required.

Signs You Might Need Emergency Dentistry

There are many reasons a patient requires an emergency dentist, from an accident to a severe oral health issue. It’s essential to understand the signs that you may need an emergency tooth extraction. The sooner you address major dental issues, the better.

Pus Formation

Bacterial infection results in pus formation in the gum, at the end of the tooth root, or in the bone that holds the teeth in place. A build-up of pus typically points to a dental abscess. For some, a dental abscess is excruciating and requires emergency dentistry.

Even if you do not feel any pain, a dental abscess infection will not go away on its own. It will move to other parts of your body through the bloodstream. Left untreated, you may develop sepsis, a life-threatening condition that can lead to organ failure and death.

Swelling

Swelling on either side of the face is a common symptom of a tooth infection and requires a professional diagnosis. If the infection isn’t treated, more severe infections may spread to your face and cause it to swell further.

Aside from the physical signs, you can also experience a throbbing toothache, sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures, and swollen lymph nodes under your jaw or neck.

Loose Tooth

In children, a loose tooth is natural. However, if you get a loose adult tooth, it is a sign that something is going on.

Anyone who notices that one of their teeth is loose should immediately contact their emergency dentist. The longer you wait, the more likely the tooth will fall out.

Remember, a loose tooth should not be taken lightly. Maximize your chances of saving your tooth and seek dental treatment immediately.

Bleeding Gums

If you notice your gums are bleeding, it can signify gingivitis or oral trauma. Either way, it’s important to consult an emergency dentist for treatment. Gum disease, also called periodontitis, begins with bacterial growth in your mouth, leading to sore, bleeding gums, and even tooth loss.

Left untreated, gum disease can also destroy the bone that supports your teeth.

Dental Trauma

Dental traumas are categorized as accidents that have badly damaged the health of teeth. They can cause teeth to become cracked, chipped, loose, or knocked out entirely.

The most common cause of dental injuries is falling. However, car accidents and sporting incidences are not uncommon.

Intense Tooth Pain

A toothache can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication while waiting for an appointment. However, intense tooth pain should not be put off, especially if it increases severity. This may be the result of gum disease or an abscessed tooth.

At this point, emergency tooth extraction is your best option.

What to Expect During a Tooth Extraction

An emergency tooth extraction sounds scary, but it’s a simple and painless procedure when done right. Most extractions follow the same three-stage procedure, as you can see below.

1. Initial Consultation

For an emergency tooth extraction, an initial consultation will typically occur on the same day of the procedure. During the consultation, your dentist will discuss your medical history and any medications you are currently taking. They will also take X-rays to evaluate your oral health.

2. Extraction Procedure

Tooth extraction is a relatively quick and easy process. First, your dentist will give you a local anesthetic to numb your mouth. This will ensure you do not feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure.

Depending on the severity of the dental trauma, you may also receive a general anesthetic to make you fall asleep during the procedure.

Once you’re anesthetized, the extraction begins. Your dentist will use tools to loosen the tooth, extract it, and place a few dissolvable stitches over the extraction site. If the tooth is concealed beneath the gum, your dentist may need to cut away some of your gum.

3. Aftercare

The local anesthetic will only last for a few hours following the extraction. However, general anesthesia will take a little longer to wear off completely – up to 24 to 48 hours.

Aftercare may differ based on the type of extraction and location of the tooth. But you can expect most extractions to heal within 7 to 10 days. Take over-the-counter painkillers as prescribed and limit your activity for the next couple of days.

It’s also important not to rinse, spit, or use a straw 24 hours after the procedure to avoid dislodging the blood clot. Your dentist will advise you on additional aftercare instructions based on your situation.

If I could give Awesome Smiles negative stars, I would. My experience here was an absolute train wreck, and it all comes down to the rude and incompetent Patricia Viriato.

First, I was told I needed a deep cleaning, and this so-called "professional" had the nerve to claim my insurance would only cover a measly 20%. When I called my insurance directly, they informed me I was actually covered for 85%—what a shocker! When I confronted Patricia about her blatant lie, she just doubled down, insisting it was still 20%. It was like talking to a wall made of ignorance.

Feeling pressured and trapped, I reluctantly agreed to fork over $900 upfront, believing I could get reimbursed later. They even coerced me into making a down payment right then and there.

To make matters worse, my insurance denied the claim because Awesome Smiles didn’t even perform the necessary periodontal charting. Seriously, how incompetent can one office be?

When I returned to demand a refund, Patricia acted as if I was the problem. Her attitude was dismissive and infuriating. She couldn’t accept that she messed everything up. After I insisted on speaking to a manager, I was finally told they would process a refund—but honestly, it felt like they were just trying to brush me off.

Do yourself a favor and avoid Awesome Smiles like the plague. Patricia is a prime example of everything wrong with customer service—rude, uninformed, and completely unhelpful. Save your time, money, and sanity—go anywhere else!

I can't say enough good things about Dr. Isabelle and Ana! They made me feel so comfortable during my visits, which was a relief since I was a bit nervous about the amount of work I needed done. They turned what could have been a stressful experience into a wonderful one, and I truly appreciate it. They also worked with my busy schedule, and the front desk staff was incredibly friendly. I highly recommend this place—everyone I interacted with was just fantastic!

My visits here have been great! Friendly, kind staff and they made me feel comfortable from the start to finish. The service quality is truly exceptional! I'm very happy with my visits! Dental assistant Manny is very attentive and kind!
The only exception is I wish if they promise incentives to their patients for bringing new patients that they would follow through on their promise.

I am literally the biggest baby when it comes to having to go to the dentist. I am just always so nervous and scared of any and everything. The staff and doctors at Awesome Smiles totally put me at ease. I felt greeted and like a VIP from the moment I walked in the door. Dr Isabelle Morris was my Doctor and she was very patient very understanding and kept me at ease the entire time. This has been my most memorable experience at a dentist's office and I feel encouraged to follow my treatment plan. I would definitely recommend this office and will be bringing my entire family here. Another great thing is their hours of operation 8am to 8pm so so convenient. Highly Recommended.. Latoya

I can't say enough about the fabulous experience I had with Dr. Michelle Luis. A true professional in every sense, she is compassionate, empathetic, and possesses a gift that immediately puts you at ease. Her treatment approach is truly collaborative, and she never pressured me to proceed until I was ready to do so. Her skill is unmatched, attention to detail is unparalleled, and - as someone who loathes visiting the dentist - possesses such a gentle touch, that I was never reminded that I was sitting in a dentist's chair. A finer dental experience I have yet to experience. If anyone were to ask, I would certainly recommend they see Dr. Michelle Luis as quickly as they can.

The team at Awesome Smiles provides a warm and inviting atmosphere, where as going to the dentist traditionally has a negative connotation. All of the staff members are friendly and easy to get a long with. In fact, they all remember my name without hesitation. They took good care of my brother and myself. They recommended me to do the Invisalign and I am really enjoying the progress thus far with my treatment and their care.

I called originally for my partner to get a Root Canal done as an emergency visit. Awesome Smiles, was extremely accommodating to get him in next day. Other dental offices were wanting Full Payment on the day of procedure. Awesome Smiles was willing to work with us on a strict budget, we didn't have to pay for the initial visit. My partner got the Root Canal done, and then we went back a week later for the Crown to be put on. The energy of the whole office is very upbeat and everyone makes you feel as though your NOT going to a dull and boring dentist's office. We would definitely recommend to everyone. A+++++++.

I highly recommend Awesome Smiles. I have an infection in my wisdom tooth and my consultation was completely free. Got a cheap script for antibiotics until I get all 4 of my messed up wisdom teeth taken out next week and they offer non credit check payments that are reasonable. Dental work can be super expensive but what they quoted me without insurance, I feel like this is a God send and probably the best price I’ve ever seen for what I need. Everybody there from reception (Isabella) to radiology (Jasmine) to my dentist Dr.Sunny was amazing and caring. I was a bit anxious going in cause of poor treatment by medical professionals in the past, but the low cost for amazing service put me at ease immediately and I look forward to going back.
